Our society has evolved a lot with the advancement in the field of science and technology over the last decades. We have shifted from an industrial based economy to a modern knowledge-based economy. Yet, our education system remains the same, as it was created to fulfill the demands of job market during the industrial revolution. We cannot see any significant change in our education system to meet the demands of students in the present context.
It’s time to rethink, how we are educating our children? Is Nepalese Schools’ education still relevant enough to fulfill the modern needs of our children?
Most schools in Nepal still follow the rote learning from a textbook and students are evaluated based on their test scores. The problem with this traditional approach is that students learn solely for the purpose of getting good grades in examination. They often feel pressurized from their parents to achieve academic excellence only. Moreover, this approach tends to create more problems and is not efficient in fulfilling the purpose of education-”unleashing the creativity of students.”
Understanding the current needs of students, Samriddhi School tries to connect the dots by practising Science, Technology, English, Arts, and Mathematics “STEAM Education” in the curriculum. Samriddhi School focuses not on academic rigour alone but equally on other aspects of human attributes through STEAM education that encourages our students to think and create.
What is STEAM education?
STEAM education is a curriculum based idea of teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in an innovative and collaborative approach.
Science is the study of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.
Technology refers to a combination of knowledge and tools that makes the work easier and solve problems.
Engineering is using tools to plan and make things.
Art is an application of human creative skills and imaginations.
Mathematics is a study of numbers and patterns.
STEAM education is an interdisciplinary approach, where the concepts from various subjects are integrated together rather than teaching each subject individually. This learning approach emphasizes project-based learning and focused toward finding a solution to the real-world problem. Students work together in teams, integrate the knowledge and concept together to solve the problem.
Here is a real-life example: an architect combines various concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math together to design a complex, feasible and practical building. It is impossible to design a building without incorporating all these skill sets and knowledge from different fields.
Note: Oftentimes STEM and STEAM are used interchangeably, where “A” is an acronym for Arts. Arts emphasizes creativity and design practices in Science and Technology. Samriddhi School focuses on “English” not “Engineering” in its curriculum for school level students. We emphasize “English” to match the International standard and prepare globally competent students.
Why is STEAM education important?
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”
The role of science and technology is indispensable in today’s global economy. All these breakthrough in science and technology largely depends on people who have a solid foundation in STEAM education. In a country like Nepal, we need more skilled manpower in science and technology. We need more critical thinkers and innovators so that they can create disruptive innovation and make an impact on our country’s economy.
STEAM education learning approach is more focused towards critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are most sought after skills in today’s job market. Most importantly, employers are looking for skilled manpower in STEAM education. Because modern day jobs are interdisciplinary in nature, and they require diverse skill sets and knowledge.
STEAM education gives an opportunity for students to explore and discover their creative pursuits. It is based on the idea that students can do really well in subjects that they’re really interested in. Every child posses a natural instinct to learn and the best way to spark interest is by exposing children in STEAM education in their early life. If they get really passionate about STEAM education, they can also pursue a career path in the related field.
